Lucerne, Switzerland is the perfect place to spend a couple days or a long weekend. We spent 3 days in Lucerne while on our tour through Switzerland, after Spending 2 Days in Zurich. Lucerne (or Luzern) is a beautiful, quaint town that offers all the Swiss charm you could dream of. I would have loved to stay longer as there are so many fun things to do in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Explore Old Town
We arrived in Lucerne around mid-day on Sunday. The center of old town is a manageable walk from the train station. The town itself is relatively small, making it easy for us to find our way to the hotel. After settling in, we ventured out to explore. We walked through the whole center of town and exploring all the back alley ways and side streets the town had to offer. The town is extremely picturesque, we could have walked around forever and still had something new to see.
Walk across chapel bridge
Chapel Bridge is one of the more popular stops for Lucerne. You can’t miss this bridge, as it is the first thing you will notice as you cross over into old town Lucerne. This bridge was built in the 1300’s, making it one of the oldest truss bridges in the world. The bridge is still accessible to pedestrians and gives you a great view down the river. We went in the off season and it was still a little crowded, I recommend going early if you really want to get some nice pictures of the inside.
Visit the Lion of Lucerne
The lion of Lucerne is a stone carving that has been owned by Lucerne since the 1800’s. It is a memorial for the Swiss guards who served in the French Revolution. It is a beautiful spot to stop by. It is located just behind the center of old town, you can easily walk or take public transport to get there.
Have a brew at rauthaus Brewery
Rauthaus Brewery is one of the many restaurants lining the water. This is a great place to stop amidst exploring the old town of Lucerne. We stopped here for a pitcher of beer and some pretzels as an appetizer before dinner. It had been raining all day and the sun decided to shine right as we sat down, offering the most amazing waterfront view of Lucerne.
Hike Mt. Pilatus
Going up to the top of Mt. Pilatus was one of the highlights of our stay in Lucerne. We took the cog up to the top of the mountain and planned to hike around some of the trails from there. As with most mountains, the weather can change drastically. While the sun was shining in town, there was a blizzard that decided to roll in right as we got to the top of the mountain. We ended up sticking around for a bit to wait and see if it would clear, I am so happy we did. The views from the top of Mt. Pilatus were jaw dropping. We were able to hike around some of the trails from the top, but because of the bad weather the ones I wanted to do were still shut down.
