Yes, you read that right. There is legitimately a hike that it solely dedicated to the consumption of fondue in Switzerland. I stumbled upon this gem while searching for hikes to go on while on vacation in Switzerland. I immediately decided this was something we had to do. This experience is available in an adorable, small resort town located in the Swiss alps, Gstaad. We went to Gstaad specifically for this hike so we only stayed one night, I wish we had made our stay longer to experience more of this quaint town.
The fondue hike is apart of a whole experience put on by Fondueland Gstaad and is one of the things that makes this town so unique. There are a few hikes to choose from, each hike ends at a large fondue pot shaped table. Once there, you can sit and relax while cooking up some Swiss fondue all while enjoying the spectacular views of Switzerlands alpine landscape (and maybe a glass of wine or two).
How it Works
These hikes are all a part of the Fondueland experience so they make it very easy for you to participate. The first thing you will want to do is reserve your fondue pack. There are four cheese shops which will assemble the pack for you, all you have to do is call ahead to reserve the day before you plan to hike. You can call any of the following shops:
We ordered our pack from the Gstaad Dairy (Molkerei Gstaad) and had a seamless experience. The pack comes with everything you need to cook your own fondue, including bread and utensils. If you would like a glass of wine while enjoying your freshly made fondue, you will need to purchase that separately.
Once you have your pack, you’ll want to decide which hike you would like to do. Most trails are nestled in the mountains surrounding the town of Gstaad, a few start from the neighboring towns. We went on the closest trail to the center of Gstaad (#3 on the map below). This hike was beautiful, it started just up the hill from the cheese shop and winded up along the river before spilling out onto the Swiss mountains.
The view from our Fondue pot was amazing. We were settled in between a couple farms and could hear cowbells in the distance. We unpacked our fondue backpack, started melting the cheese into fondue and poured a couple glasses of wine while taking it all in. Overall, the experience was unforgettable and something I highly recommend doing if you find yourself spending some time in Switzerland. It was worth the extra stop.
